Hair grows in cycles, and a certain amount of shedding every day is normal. Hair loss becomes a concern when the hair thins, the parting widens or more hair falls than usual. The most common causes are genetic pattern hair loss in women and men, shedding after illness, stress, childbirth or rapid weight loss, and deficiencies such as low iron or thyroid imbalance.
Sun on the scalp, hard water, heat styling and tight hairstyles can add to the problem. Because the causes are so varied, treatment starts with a trichology consultation and trichoscopy — a close examination of the scalp and follicles — and, where needed, blood tests.

The first step is diagnosis. If tests point to a medical cause, such as low iron or a thyroid problem, that is treated first, and scalp treatments support recovery.
